PowerPoetry.org is the first and largest online poetry community for youth, with over half a million registered members. The nonprofit was founded in 2011 by Roland Legiardi-Laura, a documentary filmmaker and schoolteacher from the Bronx. His goal was to combine digital technologies, social impact, and literacy building. Our motto is, “If you don’t learn to write your own life story, someone else will write it for you.” We encourage youth to use poetry as a creative outlet while improving literacy. The poems compiled in this book are written by the Top poets (in no particular order) of Power Poetry’s Annual Emerging Poets Slam. This slam is specifically for teen poets and offers a space for amateur poets to share the writing techniques they have already mastered as well as practice techniques they are still learning. Winners of this slam have been chosen from thousands of applicants. Winning poets demonstrated exceptional writing with regard to keen attention to detail and outstanding content. In addition, winning poets have allowed their creativity to shine through their writing with a unique voice and out-of-the-box thinking.
