Tone and Value
To learn about tone and value, it can be a useful exercise to use just one colour to create a monochromatic painting. This means that you can concentrate on achieving variation in tone rather than colour mixing, and it will be easier to create the darkest darks to the lightest lights in your painting.
Palettes
This project uses a limited palette of yellows, blues and greens to demonstrate how even by using very few colours, you will still achieve a colourful painting through the mixes that you choose to make.
The Interaction of Colour
The Christmas Cactus is a perfect example of complementary colours found in nature. I decided to paint a pale pink background as I wanted the painting to appear warm. I could have chosen a pale blue or grey background, but this would have given a cooler feeling. Background colours must be considered carefully so as to achieve a successful colour combination in the painting.
Modifying your Colours
This is very bright and cheerful painting using a limited palette of only four colours. A lot of the colours used are pure colours in various tones, but the shadows and background area are created by using modified colours. The shadows are an important part of the painting, which create depth and link up different areas within the painting.
Glazing
This still-life project shows how glazing can be used in other subjects. A vase, a leaf and their background can be given more depth by the addition of another layer of paint. A glaze will enhance the colour of the flowers, with the underlayer shining through
Mineral Pigments and Luminescent Watercolours
Shells are a perfect subject for luminescent and mineral watercolours. Areas of subtle colour typically seen on the surface of the shell lend themselves to being painted wet into wet with a touch of iridescent sheen. The blooms created by the wet into wet technique are used to recreate the markings on the shells.
