About Brush Pens

Brush pens have been used as writing instruments for thousands of years. There are many different styles and colors of brush pens available today, making them an excellent tool for illustration.

Brush pens are classified by the style of their tips: hard tip, soft tip, and brush tip. Hard and soft tip pens have relatively firm felt tips, allowing for greater precision and control, while brush tip pens have flexible hair tips (either synthetic or natural) that perform more like paintbrushes.

I recommend trying various types of pens with different degrees of flexibility and thickness until you find the kind that feels most comfortable and suits your personal style of illustration. The following guide explains each of the three basic brush pen types in detail.

ABOUT PAPER

Xuan Paper

Also known as rice paper, this absorbent paper allows for expressive brush strokes and vibrant displays of ink.

Cardstock

This heavyweight paper is slightly less absorbent than Xuan paper, so it doesn’t allow for a lot of blending when used with a water brush.

Stationery

Look for a lightweight paper with a rough surface that will catch the brush tip as you draw. This type of paper will produce illustrations with a soft impression.

Copy Paper

Since the surface of copy paper is quite smooth, it can be difficult to create rough lines, unless you move your brush quickly. This type of paper is not very absorbent, so it can be difficult to spread color using a water brush.

Basic Brush Pen Techniques: Dots – Round Dots

Lightly place the tip of the pen on the paper.

Gently rotate the pen, keeping the tip on the paper.

These dots are the simplest to make.

If your paper is absorbent, you can hold the pen tip in place for a few seconds; otherwise, rotate your pen to increase the size of the dot.
