The beginning…
“CODE BLUE! CODE BLUE!”
I pulled away from Tanji and tried to follow the crowd as they rushed down the hall with machines rolling behind them. Atif was the only person in the I.C.U. when I peeked in earlier…
“Prince?” Kapri fought through the sea of medical professionals to ask me the one question that was on all our minds. The one question I wasn’t in a position to answer her with a straight face. “Is that Atif?”
“Kapri—”
Atif’s little brother stood off to the side still coughing and wiping his face, trying to catch his breath and be noticed. Kapri finally tore her eyes away from the doctors to focus on what was going on around her. “Dash? Why are you here?”
“Kapri, you know him?” I looked back and forth between them both. What was going on up here?
“Yea,” Dash grinned eerily. “I know her. You said this Atif’s girl, right?”
In the thick of it…
“That’ll never happen with us.”
“Hmph. I bet Free thought the same thing.” She wiped tears from her eyes as she turned to look out the window. “Tell him—” her voice dropped to barely above a whisper.
“Tell him what?”
“Tell him I’m dead. That little boy looks just like you, Atif. I can’t look him in his face and not see you, not think about how you basically treated me like you loved me, yet I wasn’t important enough for you to tell the truth. Tell him I’m dead.”
“Is that what you want, Kapri?”
“Let’s not do this—”
“Nah, is that what you want?”
She wiped the tears streaming down her face…that pretty face I used to love waking up to That pretty face that was crying real tears. “Atif, please go.”
And from the time I walked out of that hospital room to this one, I hadn’t been able to get her out of my mind since…
How it all ends…
“ATIF! I LOVE THIS!” she screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “Is that an infinity pool?” she yelled, running through the house like a kid in a candy shop.
“Did I do good, Rebel?”
“Yes, my love.” She ran back to where I stood in the foyer, cuffing my ears and pulling me toward her puckered lips. Suddenly my mind flooded with memories; I remembered the night she got pregnant. “Mmmm, you did real good, baby.”
I threw her over my shoulder and carried her upstairs so we could christen the house. “Where we going, Atif?”
“To the bathroom. You don’t want Daddy to shave you?”
“Oouu God…I’ve been a bad, bad girl,” she purred.
