Drawing animals—creating something that could walk off the page—is one of the most wonderful skills to have. In this book, I aim to break things down, sharing techniques for using different surfaces so that anyone can start to draw realistic animals in colored pencil.
Of course, it takes time to build skills, but little by little those skills will improve.
CREATING LIFELIKE ANIMALS
What makes one portrait more realistic than another? It’s about…
Capturing the quality of the fur, its softness, coarseness, or silkiness. Eyes that are so real they look like they could blink. The emotion embedded in the piece. Taking note of tiny changes in tonal value, which will help bring a piece to life, making it look three-dimensional and as though you could reach in and sink your fi ngers into the fur. The catchlights in the eyes—not just the bright white ones, but the subtler ones in the bottom of the eyes as well. The layering of color, as well as softly blending.
