So either the grownups aren’t scared, or there aren’t any grownups with us anymore. Professor Adam doesn’t know we’re just going through the motions. He doesn’t understand that nothing he’s saying matters anymore. This classroom, and everything that happens inside it, once seemed important. Now it all seems silly and insignificant. I want to fling myself down and beat my hands against the ground. This isn’t how this story was supposed to end. I wish I could grab my family and run far away … all the way to the moon. But that’s impossible. And now it’s too late to run. My eyes are wide open, but I see nothing but darkness. My heart races as I try to understand what just happened. This is no accident. Someone has locked me in a place where no one can hear me scream. I am now at the mercy of a serial killer. “Have you ever wished a night could go on forever?” I ask the question so softly that I’m not sure anyone heard me until Star whispers, “Not until tonight.” She’s wedged up against me in the back seat of the limo. We’re wearing our best dresses. It’s six fifty-three in the morning on my sixteenth birthday. I stand outside the battered wooden gate to a compound just off a desolate dirt road. On either side of the gate are high concrete walls. It’s impossible to see what’s on the other side.
