Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first African-American woman to work as a professional medical doctor. Later, she also provided care for those formerly enslaved through an arrangement with the government. She became the only woman doctor to write a book in the nineteenth century. <\/p>\n

ANNIE TURNBO MALONE {1869-1957} <\/p>\n

Annie Turnbo Malone was a chemist and businesswoman whose brilliant achievements in the beauty industry helped her become the first African American female millionaire. She developed a successful line of personal hygiene and beauty products designed especially for black women. <\/p>\n

BESSIE COLEMAN {1892-1926} <\/p>\n

Bessie Coleman\u2019s mastery of mechanics, technology, and aviation fueled her quest to empower African Americans in the air and on the ground. Bessie was the first black woman with a pilot\u2019s license, and she used her talent and popularity as an aviatrix stunt performer to create change. <\/p>\n

FLEMMIE PANSY KITTRELL {1904-1980} <\/p>\n

Flemmie Pansy Kittrell transformed the public\u2019s understanding of nutrition and early childhood development. Graduating from a doctoral program in nutrition at Cornell University in 1936, Flemmie became the first African American woman to earn such an advanced degree from the university. She was also the first African American woman to receive a PhD in nutrition from any school. <\/p>\n
