Some things, he discovers, are beyond the comprehension of any mind whatever. With these, he says, it is worse than useless to meddle. Better to sit down in quiet ignorance of things that are hopelessly beyond our comprehension than try to decipher the undecipherable. He hopes to teach men to consider these matters that may be of some use and purpose in their limited lives and to leave alone the incomprehensible. His plan, then, is to find out whence human ideas are derived; i.e., the origin of ideas. Ideas he calls by that name itself, or \u201cnotions, or whatever else one may please to call them, which a man observes and is conscious to himself he has in his mind.\u201d He will attempt to discover how the mind is furnished with these ideas, or notions; on what the certainty of its knowledge is based, and the grounds for faith.<\/p>\n

Edgar Sanderson (1838-1907) was a British historian whose other works include \u201cHistory of the British Empire,\u201d \u201cHero Patriots of the Nineteenth Century,\u201d and \u201cThe Fight for the Flag in South Africa.\u201d <\/p>\n
