J. Ayer in a fabled debate about the existence of God\u00a0and the possibility of metaphysics, knew that\u00a0seminary students were fed a woefully inadequate diet\u00a0of theses and proofs, and that their familiarity\u00a0with most of history&#8217;s great thinkers was reduced\u00a0to simplistic caricatures.
